The most important thing to make for a great engagement shoot — THE most important, I'm serious! — is to set the mood! Many of my clients feel nervous before their engagement session. Couples who are normally cuddly and kissy together can freeze up in front of the camera. Before I take my camera out of my bag, they're holding hands and smiling at each other, but as soon as I take the lens cap off my camera, they stand three feet apart from each other and stare at me blankly not sure what to do with their hands.
There's a lot that goes into making your clients comfortable, but one trick I've learned to help my clients let their guard down is to play music! Music disarms us, and the right music can make us feel confident enough to be vulnerable. I usually keep my music playing at max volume on my phone in my pocket, but you could put it on a portable speaker in your bag if you want.
Sometimes I create a unique playlist for a specific session if there's a certain mood I'm trying to set, but I have one playlist I made specifically for engagement sessions that I play again and again. It's tried and true! All I do is hit shuffle and let the playlist loop for the entirety of the session. It really sets the mood for fun, dancing, and romance. This combination of songs makes me feel inspired and in love, and I think it makes my clients feel the same way.
Try making your own playlist, and let me know how it works for you and your clients! Or try my exact playlist here or below:
